Los Otros

Los Otros ist ein Lebensprojekt welches von Lee Santana, Steve Player und Hille Perl gleichermaßen dominiert und geleitet wird. Manchmal arbeiten wir auch mit anderen potentiellen Leitungspersönlichkeiten zusammen, wie zum Beispiel Pedro Estevan oder Michael Metzler.

Ausser, dass Los Otros prinzipieller Motor der Wunsch ist, mit diesem Projekt Geld zu verdienen, was nicht in die Kasse von musikalischen Leitern wandert, ist, dass wir die Verbindung von Musik und Tanz auf die Bühne bringen wollen, im Bereich Spanischer und Italienischer Musik die Improvisationsgrenzen austesten und überschreiten wollen, auf wissenschaftliche und lustorientierte Weise. Wir versuchen hier Rhythmus und Tanz (Steve), Musicalische Gelahrtheit und Technik (Lee) und satte Bogenklänge (Hille) zusammenzubringen und damit so viele Konzerte hintereinander zu bekommen, wir möglich.

Wir sind Los Otros (DIE ANDEREN), weil das jahrelang unsere Funktion war, wenn wir mit berühmteren Kollegen unterwegs waren und die Bühnen der Welt bespielten, da stand dann auf den Plakaten BERÜHMTER NAME, BERÜHMTER NAME u.a. : und u.a., das waren dann wir.

Dies ist eine Formation von vier Musikern, die glauben, daß wir die subtilste und allerleidenschaftlichste Form des Ausdruck darin finden können, indem wir zusammen Musik spielen.
Wir verbinden uns gerne durch Bach, Telemann, Guillemain, Blavet und alles mögliche andere, was uns in die Finger fällt.

Lee Santana

Lee Santana kommt aus einer Musikerfamilie im Nordamerikanischen  Bundesstaat Florida. Als Kind hat er Jazz- und Rockmusik gerne gespielt, und weniger gern Klassik. Später war es umgekehrt.

Nach langen Umwegen erhielt er Diplome mit ‘summa cum laude’-Auszeichnungen des Emerson Colleges in Boston (Massachusetts) in den Fächern Aufführungspraxis für Alte Musik und Musiktheorie. Seine Lautenlehrer waren u. a. Pat O’Brien und Steven Stubbs.

Seit 1984 wohnt er als freischaffender Lautenist und Komponist in Europa. Er ist in allen bekannten europäischen Festivals und Konzertorten für Alte Musik aufgetreten, und hat bei vielen führenden europäischen Ensembles mitgewirkt, u.a. Musica Fiata (Köln), dem Freiburger Barockorchester, Hesperion XX (Spanien) oder Les Arts Florissants (Frankreich). Seine Arbeit als Solist, Continuospieler, und Komponist ist auf über 60 CD- Produktionen dokumentiert, von denen etliche mit Preisen und Auszeichnungen versehen wurden, u.a. dem „Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik“ und dem „Echo“.

Sein Hauptprojekt ist seine Arbeit mit der Gambistin Hille Perl, entweder als Duo, oder mit ihrer Gruppe ‘Los Otros’. Weitere Schwerpunkte sind die Ensembles ‘Sirius Viols’ und ‘The Age Of Passions’, sowie seine Arbeit als Solist.

Lee Santana freut sich besonders über drei CD-Veröffentlichungen dieses Jahres:

„Loves Alchymie“, mit Hille Perl und Dorthee Mields,  bei Sony, sowie zwei Produktionen beim Label Carpe Diem  mit eigenen Werken: „SixxeS“ und „American Gamba“

Sein neues CD „Six Lute Trios from Phillipo Martino (mit dem Ensemble „Age of Passions“,Sony Classics) war in Juni CD der Woche bei Kultur Radio RBB.

Sein neueste Komposition, „Ya Cavalga Calaynos“ wird uraufgeführt in der Rheinvokal Festival Ende Juli.

As we all get older, thankfully, as the alternative would definitely be less desirable, we realize, that we have to live and play the way we want and with whom we want, the sooner the better.

The Age Of Passions is a combination of four people who believe that we can find the most passionate and most subtle expressions of everything that constantly happens to us through the music we make.

The repertoire we use to be put into sound consists of the wisdom of how to transfer affetti and emotional contents among each other and for the audience: Guillemain, Telemann, Bach, Blavet and everything else that falls into our hands.

Los Otros

Los Otros is a latent project whose unanimous leaders are Lee Santana and Steve Player and Hille Perl. We hope in the end to invite other potential leaders, like possibly Pedro Estevan, more guitar heroes, maybe a singer occasionally if we can stand it and so on.

The project’s goal (besides getting rich) is to keep working on the connection between music and dance, to experiment more in the field of Spanish and Italienate improvisation and do it in a scientific and lust-oriented manner. It is an attempt to bring together the aspects of rhythm&dance (Steve), knowledge&technique (Lee) and bowed sounds (Hille) and get as many concerts in a row as possible.

It’s called Los Otros, because that’s what we are called, when we are on tour with people that are more famous than we are, on posters it usually says, Big Name, Big Name and others, which is us.

Lee Santana

Lee Santana was born into a musician’s family in Florida. His childhood and early youth he spent playing the guitar, first rock- and jazz,  less ‘classical’, later, the other way around. In three college terms of studying the classical guitar he concentrated on new music as well as early music and became fascinated with the lute and historical instruments. So began studies in performance practise and early music at the Emerson College (Longy School of Music) in Boston, Massachussets. His main teacher for lute was Patrick O’Brien in New York.

A desire to write music, thwarted by a distrust of institutionalized new music, was temporarily appeased by an additional curriculum of music theory. He worked together with the composer Richard Cornell, who encouraged him to write his own pieces. He passed both courses of study with ‘Magna Cum Laude’ distinctions. Subsequently he studied privately with the lutenist Steve Stubbs in Europe.

In 1984 Lee Santana moved to Germany where he still lives as a free-lancing lute-player and composer.
In the course of the years he has had the honour to perform with numerous very good ensembles as well as with interesting directors and soloists. He is active as a soloist  and as duo partner of the gambist Hille Perl. Together they founded the trio LOS OTROS with Steve Player and the quartet THE AGE OF PASSIONS with Petra Müllejans and Karl Kaiser. He also plays in Hille’s ensemble ‘Sirius Viols’. All these projects, as well as programs of his own music have been documented on numerous CDs.

After  three futile years teaching at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Lee Santana is back full force on the concert circuit and in the recording studio. Several highlights this year include a new solo CD entitled „Pentagram“ with works of Bach, Vallet and Santana, as well as his first ECM recording with the legendary Manfred Eicher. He will  also have the honour of accompanying his daughter Marthe Perl on her final exam.

When he is not touring he is hiding out with his family on an old farm somewhere in northern Germany.
